Penelope Hughes-Hallett, 1927-2010

Every seat in St Lawrence on 14 April was taken by people who had come to say a sad farewell to Penelope Hughes-Hallett. Many more stood for the duration of the service. Such a turnout gave clear evidence of the love we felt for Penelope and her husband Michael. Penelope was born in Hampshire, in a house just opposite the site of Jane Austen’s own rectory. (Forty years later, and an acclaimed author, Penelope was to write her own book about Jane Austen.) Leaving school in Oxford, she returned to the family home in London, where she became a debutante and a secretary at Faber and Faber, meeting Michael when both were barely 20. After a year’s separation, insisted upon by their parents, they entered a wonderful marriage which was to last over six decades. Michael went on to manage estates at Sandringham, then Cornbury Park and finally Batsford, at which time, in 1971, the Hughes-Halletts bought the Old Rectory in Barton-on-the-Heath. Soon after her arrival in Barton Penelope undertook an Open University degree in English literature, achieving first class honours. She went on to tutor students at the Open University, becoming a Governor of this university. At the same time she sought a literary career, with published titles which included The Collins Anthology of Childhood and culminated in her most acclaimed book, The Immortal Dinner. Penelope served as trustee to a number of charities, including the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, which generously provided grants to our Parochial Church Council, enabling it to provide a new floor in St Lawrence Church and a new roof in the Old Parochial Church School. I shall remember her firstly for her attention, which I saw out the corner of my eye whenever I read the lesson at St Lawrence – no boredom here, just huge concentration on what was being read. Then there was the deep love she had for Michael, which he reciprocated for her whenever I saw them together. Then there was her ability to engage with total interest in whatever one was saying. And finally I remember her beautiful smile, which James Hughes-Hallett referred to so well in the Eulogy he gave at her funeral. I speak for all who live in our village, and many others, when I say that Penelope will be remembered with love and great admiration for years to come. Barney Henderson

Mr Robert Fance

The funeral service for Mr Robert Fance of Rectory Farm was beautifully conducted by Reverend Richard Smith at St Lawrence on 24 January 2008. Mr Fance was later buried in the churchyard. The service was attended by Mr Christopher Fance, the eldest son, together with other members of the Fance family and many friends from Barton. Robert Fance was a generous benefactor to St Lawrence and always took a great interest in the Old Parochial Church School and other village activities. He will be greatly missed by all here in the village.
