How We Were
The visitors’ book at St Lawrence tells a wonderful story of people from all over the world and often links them to times past in Barton, ,
as the following entries show:
26 May 2010, Janet Griffin (Haines), Charlton Kings, Gloucestershire. I am the daughter of Elsie Haines, who was the organist for 57 years, 1920-1977. I was married here 54 years ago. St Lawrence is always in my thoughts.
26 June 2010, Thelma Cookson, Alicante, Spain. My father, Frank Payne, was born and baptized here. Two brothers were also baptized here. Thank you for the open door policy. A beautiful and treasured place to be.
20 August 2010, Sue and Jan Bryce, Droitwich Spa, Worcestershire. My paternal grandmother was born here in 1888: Annie Amelia Griffin. Her father was a wheelwright. A beautiful village.
St Lawrence Church
Mrs Lesley Gubbins officiated at our Morning Prayer service on the fifth Sunday of Lent on 10 April. We all appreciated greatly her being with us. Lesley conducted the service quite beautifully. It was a pleasure to welcome Alan and Elaine Fisher back to St Lawrence. They had been staying nearby and decided to attend Morning Prayer. We will not forget Alan’s dedicated service to St Lawrence over many years when he was our organist.
A NEW FILM CLUB IN LITTLE COMPTON
If you enjoy watching films on the BIG screen but don't want to have to trek to Cheltenham or Banbury to do so,
we may have the solution. Little Compton Village Hall are looking at purchasing their own projector and starting a film club. This is a true film club and quite different to and not in competition with ‘village cinema’.
There is a meeting in Little Compton Village Hall to discuss what could be offered on Monday 2 May at 7 pm.

2008
Our first willow weaving day took place on 16 May and was great fun. Twelve people from around the Benefice made wigwams, decorative willow balls and smaller plant supports, and wigwams – some 7 ft tall - can now be seen standing majestically behind garden walls.
The next willow event is on Friday 5 December and you can make items such as Christmas trees, mince pie platters, and garlands. Please use the conatct form if you would like to book a place. For this event we welcome children over 12 years as well as adults.
The day will cost £35 to include lunch.
St Lawrence Church
We welcomed Elaine Hobday on Whitsunday when she came to lead the congregation in morning prayer. She preached an excellent, uplifting sermon in her usual enthusiastic way; it concerned the Holy Spirit and how we can all be comforted by its presence. Elaine’s sermon and three well known hymns played for us by our organists, Alan Fletcher, raised all our spirits as we left St Lawrence in bright sunshine.
The quinquennial inspection in 2008 was carried out by our architect, Mr M Clewes, on 22 April. The report is awaited. Hopefully there will be no horrors to deal with.
The Parochial Church Council met under the chairmanship of the Reverend Richard Smith on 12 May. If there is anything of interest to report I shall do so in the July LINK.

Parish Council
The Annual General Meeting took place on 18 April. Brigadier Johnny Rickett was elected as Chairman for 2008-2009. Mrs Jayne Hanks was appointed as Clerk. Mr John Shipton was appointed as internal auditor. Captain John Castle RN was appointed as Hon. Treasurer and at the same time congratulations were offered for his care and attention to Parish Funds for 2007-2008, and in years previous to that, by the Chairman. Great interest will be shown when Mr and Mrs Seymour-Smith start building their new ‘ecofriendly’ house at Hill Barn in July. In his annual report the Chairman highly commended the work done by Mrs Linda Graham in running the village website. Sadly the annual ‘Best Kept Village’ competition run by Warwickshire CC has now been replaced by a somewhat involved competition called ‘Best Village of the Year’, with eight categories of achievement. To take part in the competition at least three categories have to be entered. The Parish Council is considering ‘environment’, ‘communication’ and ‘community buildings’. In spite of these changed terms the Parish Council will continue to carry out the work done in previous years to spring-clean the village during the week ending 31 May.
